Tugs or tugboats are the lending hands that help to move vessels, barges, disabled ships through a narrow channel or crowded dock. Tugboat known for their strength are also used as icebreakers and salvage boats. With a history of using steam engines, tugboats are of different kinds. Some of them being notch tugs, integrated tug and barge (ITB), harbor tugs and river tugs. With a history of using steam engines, the tugboats now use diesel engines. Harbor tugs were the seagoing vessels initially used in docking and maneuvering. At the same time river tugs or push boats do not have any winch but features a flat front to easily get attached with any barge.

Tugboats make propulsion easy and many developments are being made to make it even better. Lot of replacements were made for the same like paddle wheels to propeller driven-tugs, kort nozzles raising thrust per kW/hp and many more. The propulsion systems and their configuration is given higher priority all the time for its efficient operations.
